The prelims test will consist of three two papers i.e. General Studies & Engineering Aptitude and Specific Discipline Paper. The prelims exam will be objective type (multiple choice questions). The exam will be held in offline mode (pen-paper based.The UPSC IES Syllabus is a relatively easier one than the IAS Syllabus. From the scope of exam pattern to syllabus for both exams, there is a huge difference.

The official publication of the UPSC Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam cutoff for 2024 includes information on the minimal scores needed to qualify for each category. The IES 2024 exam's total cutoff scores are as follows: 238 for the OBC category and 238 for the General and EWS categories. 202 and 227 are the corresponding cutoff scores for SC and ST candidates. The UPSC Engineering Services Examination Notification states that - a candidate must have earned an engineering degree from a university established by an act of the Central or State Legislature in India, from another educational institution founded by an act of Parliament, or from a university declared to be deemed a university under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, to be eligible to take the exam. The candidate must, however, choose any one of the four subjects - civil, mechanical, electrical, or electronics - for which they wish to take the exam.
