Hello Sohan,
For preparation you can follow the below steps:
1. First go through GATE syllabus completely and keep in mind "syllabus is the king" for competitive exams.
2. Then discuss with your seniors or already qualified students how they prepared for exam. Definitely they will tell Do's and Don'ts. So committing mistakes will drastically come done.
3. Get standard text books.
4. See the weightage of each subject, based on weightage make your priority based on your own convenience.
5. Go through last 10 year question paper, to get to know the quality and difficulty level of questions in each subject. And start reading each subject/topic

It is a very good option and the most easiest way to get selected in PSUs. You just have to give a year with full dedication. The next year, you will see yourself in top firms.
Apart from this, you can even go for higher studies like M.Tech as it helps to open lots of career opportunities.

Give mock tests as much as you can and find the topics of strong and weak zone, and then take assistance from your teachers, seniors, juniors, etc. to cover your weak zone. Slowly but gradually increase your effective study hours. Last but not the least, don't let your preparation down.

You should start preparing from the 2nd year, keep note of basic concepts. Keep revising the concepts and applications of the same. Mostly you will get application based problems. You can join a coaching in 3rd year to get some study material and revising your concepts.

Hi,
Follow these steps:
Study Subjects deeply during your semester exams as later you wont need to work hard.
Clear your basics.
Start your preparation with DMS as it is very very important subject.
Study simultaneously two subjects else you will get bored.(Depends on you)
Every day 23 hours regular study is enough for GATE preparation.
As soon as you complete the topic, solve the Previous year GATE question papers or exercise problems given at end of chapter in book.
Repeat the procedure same for all subjects.
Revision is very important,
Follow cycle Learn- Test- Analyze- improve- Learn- Test- Analyze- Improve
Solve 1 Aptitude problems daily.
