The eligibility criteria to apply for GATE for the Psychology subject is as follows:
1. The candidate needs to have a Master's degree in Psychology.
2. The master's degree could be in any related specialisation, such as applied psychology.
3. Those who have already completed their degree are eligible to apply.
4. The candidate should either be in the first year or higher if they have not completed their degree.
5. Candidates who are in their final year of an undergraduate degree programme can also apply.
6. There is no upper age limit for taking GATE Psychology. The application fee is Rs. 1700 for general candidates and Rs. 850 for women, SC, and ST candidates. You can pursue a Master's as well as do a Ph.D. after qualifying GATE.

It is recommended to begin the study for this exam as early as possible because it will provide you enough time to understand the topics and revise regularly. The best time to start preparing for the GATE exam is in your college. You can start in your 2nd year of engineering. Keep following GATE preparation time table until you complete your entire syllabus for each section of the exam. Experts suggest that candidates should at least give 4-5 hours daily for their studies, so candidates must keep this in mind.
It is important to understand the GATE syllabus and exam pattern before starting preparation. In the initial days of preparation, students can understand the syllabus and do frequent revisions. After a few months of light studies, students should be more focused on GATE preparation, tentatively starting in October 2023. The exam pattern for the GATE Life Science (XL) paper is as follows: The total number of questions will be 65. These questions will be divided in three sections: (a) Compulsory Sections: 1. General Aptitude Section (GA): This section will carry 10 questions for a total of 15 marks. 5 will carry one mark, and 5 will carry two marks. 2. Section P Chemistry This section contains a total of 15 questions carrying a total of 25 marks: 5 questions will carry 1 mark each, and 10 questions will carry 2 marks each. Also, some questions may be numerical. (b) Selective Section: You will have a choice of two sections from Q to U. In this section, only two optional sections can be answered at a time. Each of the optional sections contains a total of 30 marks. Of these 10 questions carry one mark each and other 10 questions carry two marks each. Here, too, some questions can be numerical. There would also be negative marking for incorrect answers. For instance, for a one-mark MCQ, 1/3 of a mark will be deducted for a wrong answer, and for a two-mark MCQ, 2/3 of a mark will be deducted. GATE conducts English Literature exam as part of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The GATE score is very useful for English graduates who have completed a Bachelor's degree in this subject. Career options after qualifying for the GATE exams are:
1. Higher Study at IIT Madras: With a good rank in GATE, you can get admission to IIT Madras for its M.A. English course. Also, if your admission is on the basis of your GATE ranking, then you are eligible for a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,500.
2. Higher Study in Other Countries: Some foreign universities also consider GATE scores for admitting Indian students. If your GATE percentile is above 90, then you can have a chance to do MS from abroad.
3. Do a Ph.D. to become a professor: You can pursue a Ph.D. from one of the central universities of India after qualifying GATE if you have a master's in this subject. Also, since this score is valid for three years, you may pursue a master's and apply for a Ph.D. later.
4. Teaching: You can become a teacher in online channels or offline institutes with a GATE score, and your GATE score will make you stand out.
5. Management Fellowship Programme (FPM) You can become eligible for the FPM offered by IIM if you fulfill additional eligibility requirements, which are 60% in graduation and 50% in master's. You can get a monthly stipend of Rs 29,000–30,000, and later, after the fellowship, you can build a career in management.
