As per me, you should go for GATE because there is a lot of scope if you crack this examination. Only some students attempt this examination as the difficulty level is high when compared with the level of GRE.

Use your current ECE knowledge to prepare for GATE in electronics. You can take image processing specialisation in ECE department. In IIT-Kharagpur, we have an M.Tech. course called visual information processing and embedded systems. You will have subjects such as digital Image processing, pattern recognition, computer communication and networking. You can also take electives such as "Data Structures", "Design and Analysis of Algorithms", Operating Systems, Machine Intelligence, etc. In fact, most of the students opt for these subjects because they want to go for a software job. It changes every year, as the level of paper is not same every year. But, as per the scenario of last 2-3 years, you should score at least 65 marks to get a double digit rank in GATE in Electrical Engineering discipline.

There are lot of institutions which offer GATE coaching. After your B.Tech or B.E its better to go for coaching in a reputed institution and get through with the GATE exam. Its little tough so need time for preparation.

No. GATE is not mandatory, but if you are thinking to do masters in India, then GATE is the best. Even if you spend a year in preparation, no problem, go for GATE.
Without GATE-
1.Career aspect: First thing you can't get into well reputed institutes like IITs, NITs, and some Govt colleges. When you done with you are M.Tech, the college from where you have done your masters is very important. It matters a lot in initial stages of your career. Most of the private colleges in India for name sake they are providing M.Tech degrees, but they don't have required lab facilities and well qualified faculty too, so what is the use obtaining degree
