The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ( GATE) is an all India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and Science. GATE is conducted jointly by the IISc and IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), GOI. GATE Score is primilarily used for admission in M.Tech. GATE score is also used by few Public Sector Units for recruitment of graduate engineer or management trainees.

If you study well during your all eight semesters and has good understanding of basics of your branch then six months to one year concentrated preparation in final year for GRE will be good to score well.

Yes, you can take GATE. You must complete your undergraduate education. Also, if you are planning for a job in the PSUs, I think it will be quite difficult to get through this method.

No it's not same. GRE is the test of your basic mathematics, aptitude and English language however GATE is totally a test of your engineering subjects along with 15% aptitude and English.
