Hello,
Yes, if you want to get admission in IIT's or IISC, then you don't have to appear in GATE exam. You can also get admission through IIT JAM entrance test. Candidates who want to pursue post-graduation or dual degree courses from IITs and IISC, they have to clear an entrance exam.
IIT JAM is to take admission in M.Sc/Ph.D and other post graduate exams.
By qualifying JAM test, candidates can apply for:
1. M. Sc (2 years).
2. Joint M.Sc - Ph.D.
3. M.Sc. - Ph.D dual degree.
4. M.Sc - M.Tech.
5. Post bachelor degree courses at different IITs.
6. Integrated Ph.D courses at IISC.

Don't worry as every body face hard times in their study period, so keep calm and concentrate in your 7th semester. After that, when you are in 8th semester, you are eligible to clear your backlogs, so first complete your 7th semester, then start your backlog study with 8th semester and appear for the same.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE score is used by Indian universities for higher education admission and it is not valid abroad. A lot of PSUs use GATE score to hire graduate engineers for entry level jobs.

Software industry is slowly losing its charm. If you are B.Tech CSE or IT, then you may join IT industry. I will advise against joining IT industry if you are not from CSE or IT background. If you want to specialise in your chosen area of engineering, M.Tech is a better option.

If you have a strong grip in your subject i.e. mechanical engineering, you should go for GATE exam. If you have interest in research, you should go abroad for MS.

AME is not equivalent to graduation degree in engineering, therefore, you are not eligible for GATE.
