It really doesn't matter at all. With experiences of interviews at various PSUs, and IITs, I have came across a lot of people, who tried hard, time and again, to finally seize what they wanted out of GATE. The matter of the fact is, You must justify your stand of taking a 1-year gap. It is because, once you get through with the written exam with great ranks, what awaits you next is something, where you as a person, are judged. Once you give grounds for what you wanted, you can rise better. So, All the best !

I must say go for it because the degree of teaching in that college will definitely help you to prepare for the exam and it depends on an individual about the time so if you are dedicated then you will surely be able to take out time for preparation.

GATE exam is not conducted for Humanities or Social Science disciplines. It is mainly conducted for engineering, Science, and technology fields. However, some universities or institutes may accept GATE score for admission to certain Humanities or Social Science programs. For Development Studies, you may need to check the admission requirements of the universities or institutes where you are interested in applying.

Typically, the sponsoring organization should be a government agency, a recognized industry, or a research organization, and they should have a formal agreement with the college for sponsoring candidates. The sponsoring organization may also have specific requirements for the candidates they sponsor, such as work experience or academic qualifications.

If your rank around 1000 and your category is ST then there may be chance of Miniratna and Navratna PSUs. Or you can give exam which taken by PSUs separately like HPCL, NRL, BHEL etc.
