Governors State University offers more than 85 gradaute and undergraduate programs. Governors State University is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Also, the GSU is a member of the Illinois Council of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs. Also, the College of Education of GSU is nationally accredited by Council for Accreditation of Counselor Education and Related Programs (CACREP) and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). 

Governors State Universtiy offers 31 bachelor's, 27 master's, 1 education specialist (Ed.S), 5 doctoral and 27 certificate programs. As per US News and World Report the UGS is known for its programs in Business, Management & Marketing and Liberal Arts & Sciences, Psychology, Computer & Information Sciences, Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, and Journalims etc.
