Harvard University was founded in the year 1636, making it the the oldest university in the United States. It was established post the approval of the Great and General Court of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England. Initially, the university was named Colledge. In 1638, it was renamed to Cambridge.In 1638, John Harvard, an English clergyman donated his library consisting of around 400 books and half his estate to the university. As a token of appreciation, the university was renamed as Harvard University.
