Placements are average (Almost 100%) for mechanical or any other core branch. IIT Delhi has advantage of being in the capital. Overall IIT Kanpur will always score above IIT Delhi from academic research point of view. IIT Kanpur is ranked 3/35 by India Today Engineering and IIT Delhi is ranked 1/35 by India Today Engineering .

IIT Kanpur accepts GATE scores for admission to the M.Tech course. As per the GATE COAP round 1 cutoff, the most competitive course was Microelectronics and VLSI with a closing rank of 935 for the General AII India category students. The BS programme offered at IIT Mandi is compared with the BSc Economics programme offered at IIT Kanpur. The comparison is made in terms of the NIRF Rankings and seat intake. The primary eligibility criteria for to pursue an MBA is primarily a bachelor's degree with minimum marks established by the university or the college, as well as an entrance examination score and work experience.

IIT Kanpur BSc course admission is entirely entrance-based. Candidates seeking admission to the BSc programme are required to apply and appear for the JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced exam. Therefore, candidates cannot get the direct admission to IIT Kanpur BSc course.
