Yes, the University strongly recommends the candidates to have a passport. However, it is not a condition for admission.

 Admissions to the majority of IMU programmes are conducted through IMU CET. The exam is followed by an online counselling process, wherein seats are allotted primarily on the basis of candidate's rank.

IMU is a well-known institution for Maritime studies. It offers nearly 10 courses in the field of Marine Engineering, Nautical Sciences, Port and Shipping Management, and related subjects.

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai-Mumbai Campus MERI was ranked 84th among Indian universities by UniRank in 2021.  The ICRA grading system gave the Chennai campus a grade 1. IMU Chennai offers degree, diploma, and certification programs in Marine Sciences.  The Chennai campus is considered the best for Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS).  The IMU Mumbai campus is considered the best option after IMU Chennai for Nautical Sciences.  IMU Mumbai is one of the top-ranked colleges for marine engineering.
