The Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai-Mumbai Campus MERI was ranked 84th among Indian universities by UniRank in 2021.  The ICRA grading system gave the Chennai campus a grade 1. IMU Chennai offers degree, diploma, and certification programs in Marine Sciences.  The Chennai campus is considered the best for Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS).  The IMU Mumbai campus is considered the best option after IMU Chennai for Nautical Sciences.  IMU Mumbai is one of the top-ranked colleges for marine engineering. Around 80-85% of students are placed in their course. The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a public central university in India.   It was established in 2008 by an Act of Parliament and is under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.   IMU was established to develop trained human resources for the maritime sector.   It is the only university of its kind in India.  The Mumbai campus of IMU was the first pre-sea training institution in India. It was originally under the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai in the Ministry of Shipping. LBS CAMSAR is a post-sea Maritime Education and Training Institution that offers courses for Merchant Navy personnel.

Candidates can join IMU Navi Mumbai Indian Maritime University through the Common Entrance Test (CET). The university conducts the CET online to shortlist students for various courses. Candidates must apply online and then appear for the IMU-CET. To be eligible for admission, candidates must meet the following criteria: Have a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks from a recognised universityHave at least 50% marks in English in 10th/12th/UG degreeQualify for the IMU's Common Entrance Test (CET)IMU Navi Mumbai also offers admission through lateral entry to the second year of the BSc program. Yes, the Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a government university. It was established in November 2008 by an Act of Parliament. The university is sponsored by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.  The IMU is a Central University that falls under the control of the Indian Government's Ministry of Shipping. It is also a member of the International Organization of Maritime Universities (IAMU).  The IMU was established to provide quality maritime education, training, and research. It was created by merging seven institutes that had a strong legacy in maritime education and training.  The IMU offers a 4-year B.Tech. course in Marine Engineering, as well as PG courses. It also provides students with regular industrial visits, industry-academia interaction series, and placement guidance. Additionally, the university maintains campuses in various locations, including Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai, and Visakhapatnam.
