Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in Industrial Design is a 4-year full time (or equivalent part-time) undergraduate course. The programme is divided into 8 semesters of six months each. The course is best suited for those who are interested in seeking a career in anything from marketing companies to government agencies. Having a Bachelors in industrial design opens the gateway to being a product designer, industrial designer researcher, art director, desktop publisher, etc. One may work in industries including media, public relations, communications, education and business. Projects in this line of work include designing products ranging from devices like mobile phones and computers, or even furniture and fashion magazines, or movies. Any design course fundamentally caters to those creatively inclined and left-brain oriented, equipping them with the necessary skills to make a career out of essentially thinking outside the box.

Prefer IIT Bombay anytime over State School of Design, when it comes to B.Des Industrial design. If you have a credible body of specimen work done by you, as is expected of the students of top-notch design schools, you might get placed right on the Campus itself.or you might get work orders as a freelancer. The second option, though paying less at the initial stage, keeps the prospects open for you to get enhanced earnings as the reputation grows. So, before your academic terms end, build an impressive spec file, and have soft copies ready. If there is any work worth claiming IPR on, do take care to get these registered, before circulation.
Placements are good as there is a high demand for designers in the market. During my time, a lot of service companies like TCS, Infosys etc. came to campus for placement. However, the trend has changed to Product companies now. The minimum package you can expect is around 8L per annum and the maximum goes up to 24L for a fresher.

An Industrial or a product designer works on designing, creating and testing of new products that are mass produced. For example, cars, refrigerator, air conditioners etc. They have to analyse and determine a product's function, aesthetics, cost and time to produce while designing these products. An industrial designer uses both; artistic capability and engineering knowledge to conceptualize and execute the process of making a product. Following are the qualities and attributes of a successful industrial designer:
1. Ability to recognize and meet consumer tastes and demand.
2. Ability to innovate according to market trends
3. Ability to understand the target audience
4. Ability to visualize a product and be creative in its design
5. Proficiency in using virtual illustration software such as Autodesk Sketchbook or Adobe Photoshop to create 2D drawings of products and must also be able to use surface modeling and solid modeling software such as Autodesk Alias and Computer-Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA) to build digital models and renderings.
A career in product/industrial design would typically require a Bachelors (B.Des) or a Masters (M.Des) degree in product design. After successful completion of the course, you can work as Designers, Business director, Project manager or Senior designer in various design firms and manufacturing companies.
