Of course, all the three institutions have a big name for engineering, but I think IIIT Hyderabad and VIT Vellore are good for R&D.

Yes, a dropout can apply for undergraduate UGAT any NIT, IIIT on the basis of his/her JEE Mains rank. If you have passed 12th in 2018 and dropped one year then you can apply in 2019 on the basis of your rank of JEE Mains 2019.

It totally depend on JOSAA counselling. You may get NIT-Allahabad, but IIIT-Hyderabad is best. IIIT is among all the IIITs, so you cannot get it.

In terms of placement, IIIT Hyderabad is the best among all. It is even better than many IITs in terms of CSE branch and also according to the placement.
