IPMAT Process

After the IPMAT exam results are declared, shortlisted candidates are invited for counselling. The counselling process typically involves document verification, seat allocation based on merit, and choice filling. However,  a general outline of how the IPMAT counselling process is typically conducted is as follows:After the IPMAT exam is conducted, IIM Indore releases a list of shortlisted candidates who are eligible to participate in the counselling process after a few days. The shortlisted candidates are usually based on their IPMAT exam scores and cutoffs.Shortlisted candidates receive call letters or emails containing details of the counselling schedule, venue, and instructions for the counselling process.Candidates then have to appear for a Personal Interview conducted by IIM Indore in about 8 cities in India.During counselling, candidates are required to carry the necessary documents for verification. This includes IPMAT admit card, scorecard, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, passing certificates, category certificate (if applicable), domicile certificate (if required), photo ID proof, passport-sized photographs, etc.Seats are allotted to candidates based on their IPMAT rank Higher-ranked candidates have a better chance of securing a seat. After the seat allotment, candidates who are satisfied with their allotted seat need to confirm their acceptance by paying the required admission fees within the specified time frame. This step confirms their seat in the programme.In case of any vacant seats or withdrawal of candidates, there might be additional rounds of counseling or a waitlist to fill those seats.

The selection procedure through IPMAT basically consists of two stages, i.e. IPMAT exam and WAT-PI:IPMAT Exam: The first stage is the IPMAT exam itself. It is a computer-based test that assesses a candidate's aptitude and proficiency in areas such as Quantitative Aptitude (QA) and Verbal Ability (VA). The exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) as well as Short-Answer type questions, and the scores obtained in this exam serve as the basis for shortlisting candidates for the next stage.Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI): Shortlisted candidates from the IPMAT proceed to the second stage if they match the cutoff criteria, which involves a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). The WAT assesses a candidate's written communication skills and ability to express their thoughts coherently on a given topic. The PI evaluates a candidate's overall personality, communication skills, confidence, and suitability for the programme.The WAT and PI rounds are conducted by IIM Indore, the exam conducting body of IPMAT. The weightage assigned to each component of the selection process may vary each year. Generally, the IPMAT exam score holds significant weightage in the selection process, while the WAT and PI performance also play a crucial role in the final selection.

IPM is considered one of India's the toughest exams, with a low success rate. You can expect 20-30 thousand students taking IPMAT to compete for just 150 seats this year. This means only 0.75% of students will clear the exam to study at IIM, indicating competition and the difficulty level of the exam. The aptitude test has two sections- Verbal Ability and Quantitative Ability. Although the aptitude test is based on basic high school mathematics, the English language and logical reasoning. The exam tests your aptitude, analytical and quantitative skills, data interpretation and logical reasoning skills more than it being a memory-based test! Making it quite a challenging exam to crack.
