You must score 75% or more to appear for JEE Mains. Many states and private institutes admit students based on AIR. In these institutions, you can get admission based on AIR. But, on the other hand there are many states and private institutes which conduct their own entrance test.
To get admission into any of these, you will have to appear for each and every test. Unfortunately, nothing is on horizon like NEET is for medical, on engineering side. We all have to put pressure on government to have a single all India test for admission to any of engineering colleges in India.

This year the system for deciding AIR has undergone changes. Marks obtained in 12th will not be counted. Marks scored only in JEE Mains are going to be considered. Secondly, there is a huge variation in ranking required to get admission in different NITs. Don't worry about that aspect now. Concentrate on studying.
