IIT Bombay offers a two-year Master of Arts (M.A. ) programme in English, which is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of English language and literature. The programme aims to equip students with critical and analytical skills required to engage with literary texts from various genres and historical periods. The course structure of the M.A. programme in English at IIT Bombay is as follows:
First Year:
Semester I: Literary Theory and Criticism, British Literature from 14th to 18th century, American Literature, Indian Writing in English
Semester II: British Literature from 19th century to Contemporary times, Literary Genres (Poetry, Drama, Novel), Commonwealth Literature, Language and Linguistics
Second Year:
Semester III: Optional Papers (choose from a range of electives), Indian Aesthetics, Literary and Cultural Studies
Semester IV: Dissertation
In the first year of the programme, students are introduced to the foundational concepts and theories of literature, along with the history of literature in Britain, America, and India. They also study the different literary genres such as poetry, drama, and novel. In the second year, students have the option to choose from a range of electives, which may include topics such as postcolonial literature, literary translation, feminist literary theory, and contemporary literature. In the final semester, students are required to undertake a research project in the form of a dissertation, which provides them with an opportunity to explore a topic of their interest in-depth and demonstrate their research and analytical skills.
