Yes, you are eligible to apply for UGC NET Exam. IGNOU is also a recognised university for UGC NET. As you said, your subject is Economics, therefore you are eligible to take your exam with Economics subject. Before applying, make sure that you have fulfilled the eligibility criteria or not. You wanted to apply for Professor post, so there is no upper age limit for applying but you should have minimum 55% marks in your master's.

Hi, Economics qualification is very good recognised in the Indian banking sector, insurance sector etc. , and if you are interested in teaching field then you can become an economics teacher/professor in colleges/universities. Economics qualification is very much recognised in banking sector, insurance sector and Indian economics service and in teaching field as you can become economics teacher in schools and in colleges. Stock exchange is also a sector where post graduate in economics can look for great career/jobs opportunities as broker and market researcher, etc. Multinational companies and computer industries also hire economics PG candidates. Otherwise there are various other options available for you like you can seek jobs in railways, civil services, staff selection commission even in defense.
