In 2017, there's a great value in pursuing Visharad as after doing it you can directly apply for MA (Music) & then there's no need to do BA (Music) 3 Years course or 1 Year BA Music programme. Yes, it can be called a degree. I am myself pursuing Hindustani Shastriya Sangeet from Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya.

M.A. in Vocal Music from Rabindra Bharati University requires its candidates to have completed M.A. or B.A,(Hons./Spl.) in Vocal Music or in any subject with special aptitude in Vocal Music from any UGC recognized University.
You should find out whether the course you have done in classical music is equivalent to a B.A. in vocal music, so that you can apply to the institute for this course. Regards.
