Hi Swapnil,
VIT mechanical engineering department is one of the very good departments. As far as placements are concerned I would like to share an experience of my roommates. Two years back, two M.Tech. 2nd year students were my roommates. I remember that they had sat for an interview of at least 5-6 companies in front of me. Also, there were some more companies for which their profile wasn't suitable.

Hello,
Anxiety about packages at the time of placements is an activity, that every student has to undergo. But anxiety should spur you into doing better and not bogging you down.
Packages are strictly a function of demand & supply. Also, your academics. Employers surely will like to get best value for their money. Hence top packages are offered only to 1 or 2 students.
Presently, IT rules the roost & if you are in top five of your batch you can expect 6-10 L. Others would get about 3-5 L.

Go for PG if it is feasible for you. As on completion of your M.Tech the kind of career you shall be starting would be quite rewarding. Also, it will keep you away from the crowd of BE. You will find yourself in far more better position.
