The candidates have a choice to apply for the BE Marine engineering course through entrance exams or through direct entry as well. Admission for BE Marine Engineering course is based on the merit-list or entrance exam which is followed by a personal interview round.Aspiring students should have passed XII with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or equivalent or equivalent examination from a recognized board of education.

There are the courses
1.4 years of B.Tech in Marine Engineering or B.Tech in Nautical Technology with a minimum of 60% average, or
2. B.Tech/BE in Mechanical Engineering or Production Engineering with a minimum of 60% average, or
3. B.Tech/BE in Naval Architecture with a minimum of 60% average, or
4.3 years of Diploma/college degree as Deck or Engine Room Officer or B.Sc. In Nautical Science with a minimum of 60% average plus Class I Certificate of Competency as Master or Chief Engineer
5. English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 (no element below 5.5) or equivalent.

If you want to go in the deck side of the ship, then go for DNS or B.Sc. Nautical Science. And if you want to go for the engine side, then opt for B.Tech Marine engineering. There is scope in all the 3 courses and finally after completing the course you will end up in a ship. DNS is a 1 year Diploma course, after which you will be sailing as a cadet and will be earning in US Dollars. Holding a Diploma in Marine Engineering degree is a big deal. With this, you can work in India as well as abroad with handsome salary. The placement in Maritime foundation is quite good. No, the NCC Certificate is not mandatory to join the IMA. The eligibility criteria of the IMA specify that you must be:
1. A graduate of a recognised university CDS entry).
2. Unmarried male candidate
3. Between the ages of 19 and 24 years, depending on the January or July batch. In the SSB stage, the NCC Certificate may give you an advantage in getting recommended. However, this Certificate is not mandatory to apply for IMA. You can either join IMA through an NDA or CDS exam. After passing the 12th grade, you can apply to the NDA and after a three-year training programme, you will join the IMA.
