Marine Engineering

Shipping Industry is a good sector where one may build a rewarding career. It is an important sector, which is crucial for the growth and stability of the Global Economy. You can continue your study for schooling and complete your class 12th and then you can join B.Tech in Marine or you can join Diploma course in Mechanical or Marine Engineering after class 10th. Completion of the Diploma course should be from a recognised Institute. Minimum marks required in Diploma course is 60%. Candidates should also have minimum 50% marks in English subject (in 10th or 12th standard examination). In case of regular B.E. /B.Tech. Marine Engineering programme, age of candidate should be within 17-25 years of age. In case of lateral entry, there is no lower age limit and the upper limit is 25 years. Apart from Educational qualifications and age limit, medical standards is also given much priority in case of this course. After the completion of the programme, successful candidates have to take on challenging tasks while on a ship. For performing such tasks, a candidate should satisfy certain health related criteria. Candidates should not be color blind or night blind. Unaided vision in each eye should be 6/12. Also, health checkups are held to check whether the candidate is qualified to face seafaring roles.

The basic qualification required is Bachelors course in Marine Engineering. The duration of the course is 4 years. For those aspiring to go for further studies options like Masters in Marine Engineering, Ph.D is available. The duration of the Master's degree course is two years. Only those candidates who have completed their 12th standard with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) or equivalent are eligible for B.Tech course. The candidates must have done opted for 2 science subjects i.e. Physics and Chemistry. Also, along with that, Mathematics should have been one of the subjects opted for. There are two main training centres-Training Ship Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata which conduct courses in Marine Engineering. The New Delhi based International Maritime Institute also conducts courses related to the field. The degree offered in these courses is that of engineering or B.Sc in Nautical Sciences. A number of private institutes also offer courses in Marine Engineering.
