Hi Akshay,
You can join merchant navy directly after class 12th by clearing the NDA (National Defense Academy) exam or IIT-JEE.
Following is the eligibility criteria for the same:
1. Candidates must have completed class 12th with PCM subjects from any recognised institute.
2. You must have at least 55% in class 12th.
3. Must pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.

Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete their degree in mechanical or marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field. Indian Maritime University conducts Joint Entrance Test for admission in various colleges for different degrees to join Merchant Navy. Eligibility criteria for degree in nautical science and marine engineering is as follows 10+2 / equivalent (PCM-60% & English- 50% ). In case of SC/ST candidates, there will be a 5% relaxation in eligibility marks; however, it will not apply to English marks.

Mechanical engineering graduates on completion of B.Tech can undergo 1 year duration Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course to enter into merchant navy as Marine engineer. This course is offered by lot of institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping.

In order to become Merchant Navy officer, you are advised to appear for Joint Admission Test conducted by Indian Maritime University(IMU). You can opt for B.Sc Nautical Science or B.Tech in marine engineering. You may refer to IMU website for further details.
