Please check the cutoff announced for MHCET. After the results are out, also check what the participating Universities are and what cutoff have they put for intake of the students, so only on that basis will you be able to know where will you get admission in one of the participating colleges or not.

To get admission, you have to qualify the entrance exam. It is mandatory.

See, 40 is not a good score in JEE Mains, but if you compare your score with others in your city it may be approximately same. With your score, you can surely get an engineering college. Don't expect NITs or other government colleges, but you can get a decent college in your own city or maybe of your state. It is all relative, so you don't need to worry much. First, fill JoSAA application form, and also the form of your state counselling. There are also some private colleges, which offer admission through JEE Mains. JEE Mains offers you a lot of colleges all over India, and MHCET within Maharashtra, however, it's better to attempt both the exams because you have a lot of options to choose from.
