The National Institute of Design Bengaluru was established in March 2006 as an initiative of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The National Institute Design Act of 2014 recognized it as an "Institute of National Importance" and it is known as the R&D campus of NID.
