NID, Ahmedabad is the best institute for design in India. If you are thinking to get in the same, you should get in without thinking twice. The faculty, placements and even the infrastructure leads every institute in the country.

Automobile engineering is quite better than B.Des in automobile engineering or automotive engineering is a part of mechanical engineering. Through the application of automotive technology, the course offers specialisation in vehicle designing, repairing, testing and assembling. In this programme, one can also learn safety engineering, quality management and control, automotive analytics as well as assembling and installation of various automobiles. BE/B.Tech in automobile engineering is a 4-year programme. This programme also involves the study of courses related to aerospace and marine engineering.

I'll answer it in short.
NID is purely dedicated to designing areas. There are few courses only for fashion related.
People work in depth of each area of design viz, fashion, automobiles, lifestyle, architecture, film, cartoons, movie making, communication and much more. They do not just stick to the fashion world.
NID people work to change the world.
NIFT is mostly dedicated to the fashion world as I said earlier.
There are many branches but indirectly they all are connected with fashion only, viz; Leather, Textiles, Lifestyle, Knitwear, Fashion communication etc.

NID has a 4-year Bachelor of Design program wherein the first year is foundation while the following years are spent in specialising in a field of your choice (out of 8 disciplines), the syllabus thereby varies greatly. NID also offers a Master's degree programme in Design for a period of 2 years offering a range of other disciplines, each with a different syllabus.
