The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru is a government institute. It is an Institute of National Importance operating autonomously under the Ministry of Health. NIMHANS is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been ranked 4th in the medical category in India. The institute was declared a 'Deemed University' by the Central Government in 1994 and was conferred the status of an 'Institute of National Importance' in 2012. Therefore, NIMHANS is a government-funded institution and not a private one.
