Both the colleges are good. NIT-Hamirpur was established in 1986 and converted into NIT in 2002. BIT Mesra was established in 1955. Both Colleges are one of the top Engineering Colleges in India. You can take any of two. Both are good.

Branches does't matter. Syllabus is same for all NIT. You should go for your interest.

NITs usually have better packages in almost all branches of engineering. However, material science is itself a very good branch and has a promising career. Many of my friends are currently pursuing the same course and are satisfied. So I would say that it is a good option.

Civil engineering was the first branch of NIT,Hamirpur, hence it is well established branch of the institute. Civil engineering students are very busy here at NIT-H as compared to other branches. Hence it is a good branch of NITH.

I will suggest you to continue with computer science and engineering and information technology in NITs like Bhopal as they will have a better future perspective and will have excellent placements too.
