The age of the candidate should be between 17-25 years, at the time when the course starts.
Along with educational qualification, medical standards are also given much importance. It is due to the fact that after completion of the course, a cadet may have to work under testing conditions in a ship.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum educational qualification required to pursue this course is 10+2 Science stream schooling with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects. Students should have passed 12th Board examination from a Recognized Board. Minimum marks criteria may exist and is generally around 50-60% marks in Board Examination.

Nautical Science is an undergraduate course approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, which falls under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
The course is a study of the basic academic and practical devices required to safely navigate and operate marine vehicles, such as a ship. The subjects of study that form part of the courses curriculum are navigation and seamanship, which is the basic science of application of shipboard equipment and tools.
