India has a very well developed and maintained petrochemical industry in both government and private sector with ample opportunities for petroleum engineering graduates. But it is a niche branch of engineering with a limited and lesser scope in comparison to chemical and mechanical engineering. Fresh petroleum engineer can expect an average CTC of Rs. 5 to 6 Lakhs.

Petroleum Engineering is a niche branch branch of engineering therefore career opportunities are limited in comparison to core engineering branches. Major employer of Petroleum engineers is Public sector units. However, with lot of private sector and foreign investment this sector will have good opportunities for Petroleum engineers in future.
