Hi,
You can go for Diploma in oil refining, etc. , or else you can apply for job notification issued by government oil companies like IOCL, GAIL, etc. on the basis of ITI, as minimum qualification.

Hello Vinayak, the marks which can get you admission in MIT, Pune for petroleum engineering differ from year to year and hence anything which I may state here may not be valid for the coming year. However what is important is to know admission process and the basis on which admissions are given for undergraduate studies in this Institute. Chemical engineering is the best. But, if you see for campus placement, if company come in your college, then petroleum is better, otherwise chemical engineering is best. Crack GATE go in PSU like ONGC IOCL HPCL BPCL etc.

I am neither a career advisor nor an educationist. I am an ECE graduate currently working as an IT/Software professional. Also, the answer caters specifically to the Indian engineering diaspora. So take my answer with a pinch of salt.
Short answer-
If you strictly have to choose between these two branches in the Indian academic system, go for IT if you want to be closer to a CSE program. The IT program though contains courses encompassing the management and commercial aspects of the industry, you'll still get the minimum or even more coursework required for a career as a software developer or computer scientist in the future.
