Go through Hudson's Background to the study of Literature threadbare. The book will give you a comprehensive idea. Study Abram's Literary Terms beforehand. Read some Shakespeare and Keats. Improve your literary taste. Learn to read in detail. Get rid of superficial reading.

Different countries have different requirements. You may not have to take any exams except the IELTS. What is most important is how you first co-ordinate with the university /department heads or research supervisors. Even before applying you have to contact various universities offering research work in English literature, you have to share your research interest and proposal, prior publications etc. And be accepted by them.
