TIFR also has an entrance exam for Ph.D. You can try out UGC NET exam for JRF (junior research fellowship) it increases your chances of getting Ph.D for a specific subject (i.e. the specialisation you are looking for).

I feel both these universities have good reputation. I would therefore like to advise you that please select the good guide out of these two. Once you do this, your half the troubles are over. Then it's only a matter of time before you can complete your research work and will be on the way to get your coveted degree.
Firstly, Guide and then the research topic should be your priority.
Best wishes.

For pursuing Ph.D, one has to first clear the mandatory entrance exam or eligibility exam. Then, look for University approved guide in your subject who will accept you as research scholar. Then, decide on the topic of research under guidance of the guide. Register it with University and start off with the research. In Coimbatore, there are many places viz Karunya, Amrita, PSG college etc. Who offer this programme. You need to approach one of these personally and start off. Best wishes.
