With an 85 percentile in the CSIR NET Life Sciences exam, your eligibility depends on the cutoff percentiles set for Assistant Professor, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), and Ph.D. admissions. Yes, in general, a master's degree is one of the best stepping stones toward a doctorate. I would recommend that. However, I would also encourage anyone to reflect on why one would want to pursue a doctorate. A PhD is typically a research degree. It may help in teaching, and sometimes consulting, but in general, it should not be considered the best course for professional development.A master's degree indicates mastery of one's profession. If one is an engineer or professional, the master's degree will help one progress professionally more than will a doctoral degree.

While work experience is not always mandatory, having experience in a finance-related field (e.g., investment banking, corporate finance, or financial consulting) can strengthen your application, especially in practical research areas. It may also help you demonstrate real-world application of finance theories.
