There is no comparison between engineering and pilot if you want to work as the person who designs things then choose engineering and if you want to serve others then choose a career as a pilot. In engineering also you study aerodynamics but in CPL, you get practical knowledge.

PPL is an intermediate stage before CPL. Although it is not a compulsory one. Usually, aspirants do fly all 200 hours (as required for issue of CPL) on SPL itself. You may get PPL issued at an intermediate stage where you complete all it's requirements as decided by DGCA. It shall although might not be of any major use to you. As most of the air carriers require their pilots to hold a CPL.

For non-type rated first officer- Valid ICAO ATPL or Frozen ATPL (ATPL Theory Passes/Credits and MCC).
