The best colleges for product design I know of include Georgia Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University, Arizona State University, University of Cincinnati, Ohio State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Rhode Island School of Design to name a few. These are best known in terms of research and internship.
Now, product design is also called industrial design and will include components of arts, mathematics, engineering and other aspects of designing. You must therefore check the syllabus carefully before applying and if it fits with your interests and requirements. I am not in a position t

Government institutes:
1) IDC (Industrial Design Center), IITB, Mumbai
Private Institutes:
2) Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune
3) MIT Institute of Design, Pune
4) DSK International, Pune
5) College of Architecture and Center for Design, Nashik (not sure if it's private or govt.)

Design Engineers are required in almost every sector be it automobile, aerospace, shipping, construction, IC design, medical equipments, sports gears and office accessories etc. Industrial designers also carry out extensive research on latest design trends, market values, safety, texture, shape, safety weight and materials to be used before designing a product.
An industrial designer can get recruited as CAD engineer, CAID engineer, graphic designer, ceramic designer, automobile designer, public utility equipments designer, appliances and house ware designer or quality control designer. Even the Government of India recruits

It is tough to state which one is better as every institute has its own plus and minus points. You need to check certain parameters before joining any institute such as:
*recognition.
*success rate.
*how old the institute is.
*course details.
*faculty.
*alumni feedback.
*Specialization offered.
*Past placements records.
*Tuition fees.
*City preference.
*Industry interface etc.
So, think and decide wisely.
