For MD-Psychiatry, an MBBS is a must. Because BAMS and Post Graduation in Psychiatry are two different branches of medicine.

Hello Rich,
It's very nice to your interest in the subject of psychology. It's good and has many specialist branches in PG. However psychiatry is different. It's a branch of medicine. One needs to be MBBS before pursuing MD in psychiatry. But there are many branches in psychology that you can select from for your PG.

Prepare for Medical Entrance exams AIIMS JIPMER NEET UG to get into MBBS course. After you complete 5 and a half year MBBS course, you can give NEET PG again to get into MD Psychiatry course or Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine. After 3 years of MD Psychiatry course or 2 years of DPM course, you are now a Psychiatrist. Aim for premier institutions for Psychiatry like NIMHANS, Bangalore or AIIMS New Delhi.

Psychology is the study of mind, thought pattern and behaviour of human being. ART student can become psychologist but not psychiatrist. For becoming psychiatrist student need to be MBBS but for becoming psychologist students can take any stream. The Basic difference between psychologist and psychiatrist is that, the psychiatrist has the authority to treat the patient of depression

In India MBBS degree is the basic qualification needed to do Psychiatry. After completing MBBS (including internship) one can attend various PG Medical Entrance Exams and take MD in psychiatry which is a 3-year course. Diploma Course in Psychiatry or DNB Psychiatry can also be taken to become a Psychiatrist. Regards.
