The syllabus of the newly proposed Indian Railway Management Service exam is as follows:
1. Since you will need to appear in the same paper as CSE Prelim, this stage's syllabus is similar to that of CSE Prelim.
2. The IRMS cutoff will differ from the CSE cutoff.
3. There will be four conventional essay-style papers on the main stage.
4. There are two qualifying papers for language.

The IRMS exam has been announced by the ministry of railways. This exam will be held in India beginning in 2023 to recruit railway management officers. The IRMS exam will be conducted by UPSC in line with the CSE exam. According to the official notification released by the ministry, IRMS will conduct a two-tier examination. The first stage will be the preliminary stage, and the second stage will be the main stage. The shortlisted candidates will be called for a personality test. 1. This exam will be conducted from 2023 onwards.
2. The prelims for this exam will be conducted along with the CSE prelims.
3. After the announcement of the CSE cutoff, the IRMS cutoff will be announced separately.
4. The second stage is the Mains, which consists of four papers.
5. Out of these four, two are qualifying papers and two optional papers, which will account for merit.
6. The qualifying papers are similar to the UPSC compulsory English and Indian language papers.
7. For the optional paper, you need to choose from only four subjects, which are: (a) Commerce and accountancy (b) Civil Engineering (c) Mechanical Engineering (d) Electrical Engineering
8. The merit will be prepared for these two optional papers, consisting of 250 marks each, I. e. , a total of 500 marks.
9. Finally, a personality test will be conducted with 100 marks.
10. The UPSC will publish a list of shortlisted candidates who will be called for training by the Ministry.

The Indian Railways will now recruit officers through the IRMS exam, and only the prelim stage will be common to the UPSC CSE; the other two stages have separate exam structures. Both ways are good; if you want to join for generalist positions through IRMS, CSE is better, whereas if you want to become a specialist, ESE is better.
1. Salary: Both services are group "A" services with an equal salary structure as per the seventh pay commission.
2. Nature of work: The IRMS's work is to look after management in the railways, whereas ESE includes branch-specific work such as mechanical engineers in the railways, who will work in the Mechanical Engineering Division of the Indian Railways.
3. Exam: Through CSE, you will be required to appear in the common preliminary. The CSE prelim syllabus is significantly larger than the ESE prelim syllabus. The questions in CSE are more general than those in ESE, which will be more technical in nature. In addition, unlike ESE, which is branch specific, you can select your optional for IRMS in main.
4. Career advancement: The promotional scale is similar, but you will have more diverse work opportunities in IRMS, unlike ESE.
