SHU provides separate on-campus accommodation to freshman students at certain residential halls. Freshman students have the option of choosing between rooms that accommodate up to three members. Returning students have the option of choosing between apartment and suite-style rooms during their sophomore year. Options, such as townhouses, are also provided by some residential halls. For the academic year, 2022-2023 the university enrolled more then 9,785 students, including 6,071 full-time undergraduates, 690 part-time undergraduates, and 3,024 full-and part-time graduate students. SHU received a total of 12,663 applications for the freshmen year, of which over 9,000 were enrolled. Out of the total student enrollment, 300 students were from foreign countries. The enrolled student body had applicants hailing from 46 states, the District of Columbia, plus two U.S. territories and over 40 countries.

Early decision results are declared by mid-December, while early action results are declared within two to three weeks. Since graduate programs have rolling admissions, the decisions are declared as soon as possible after the university receives a complete application from the student.

International undergraduate students applying through the Common App will need to pay USD 50 as an application fee and fill up a supplemental form of SHU. This fee is non-refundable. Students who apply through the SHU International Application portal need not pay any application fee. International graduate students need to pay a non-refundable application fee of USD 75.
