There is a vast difference between learning a tool and learn to using that tool for your own work, if you will learn how to use any tool for your own work, you will be able to complete your work in a proper manner or if you are focusing only tool, then you will not be able to work beyond that. I am a freelance web designer and most of my friends are 3D artists. Web designing and 3DS max are like water and fire I.e very different from each other. For website design and development, one should know graphic designing and software like - Illustrator, InDesign, CorelDRAW, etc. Almost 2D stuff.
while 3DS Max is a software which is used for 3D animation, game modelling, images, graphics, etc. so both of them are very different to each other but both have a great value in the market.
When it comes to a job, 3DS max gives you a number of career opportunities than web designing.

But, a graphic artists can create visual concepts, and not effects using software. They also create layouts, logos and product design for magazines, brochures and commercials.
