It is very nice to know that you are interested to continue your studies and take up course for graduation in engineering after completion of your Diploma. It is good. After completion of Diploma a student can get admitted into second year of engineering directly under what is called as lateral method of admission. As to your query I can say with certainty that there is no lag whatsoever. The moment you finish your Diploma you can apply through the portal of directorate of technical education of your state for registering your name for lateral admission in Engineering.
