B.Tech in CSE is the most preferred option to become a software engineer after completing class 12th. Indian IT industry also recruits software engineers with B.Tech IT, ECE, MCA and M.Sc CS / IT educational qualifications. BCA and B.Sc CS/ IT graduates are hired for junior software engineer or computer operations roles.

If you have maths as a subject in XII board then you can join BCA followed by MCA to become a software engineer. If you do not have maths as a subject, you can still join BCA but your college/ university options will be lesser as the majority of universities/ colleges eligibility criteria for BCA is maths in class XII board. For example, you can join BCA offered by IGNOU with Maths.

You cannot avoid appearing in entrance examinations as most of private universities also conduct engineering entrance examinations for admission in their engineering programs. Few private engineering universities allows admission based on class 12th performance e.g. BITS - Pilani gives direct admission to toppers of different boards.
