St Joseph's University was previously St. Joseph’s College. On July 2, 2022, the government of Karnataka issued a notification conferring the status of a University on the college under the RUSA 2.0 Scheme of the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) by the St Joseph’s University Act, 2021. It officially upgraded from St. Joseph’s College to St. Joseph’s University on September 27, 2022. 

Admission to BA (Visual Communication), BA (EJP), BVoc, and PG Diploma programs at SJU Bangalore in 2024 is contingent upon successfully completing the SJU Entrance Test (SJUET). Other UG and PG courses are based on merit scores.
