Yes from July NET will once again be conducted twice a year, and a two-paper exam will replace the earlier three-paper format. As per the new exam pattern, there will be two papers: paper I will comprise objective questions to test the teaching abilities, aptitude and approach of candidates towards engaging students.

You can select the subject you have studied in M.Sc. This subject must be included in the list of subjects given in UGC website. As microbiology is included under the list for CSIR NET you can take the test in the same stream. Please check for detailed eligibility to appear for the NET exam as mentioned at the link provided below:

Hello Priya,
You can appear for NET exam only after clearing the post-graduation degree. The NET exam is the national level exam which is conducted for the determination of candidates for assistant professor and junior research fellowships. The eligibility for the NET Exam is as follows:
Educational Qualification: The Candidates must have post-graduation degree with minimum 55% marks from recognized university in relevant subject. Age criteria: The maximum age criteria for the junior research fellowship is 30 years while there is no age limit for assistant professor.

National Eligibility Test, which is conducted by the University Grants Commission for the lectureship jobs in central government colleges, does not have Botany or Zoology as one of the subjects. This, I believe has lead to confusion for you regarding the subject. The answer to your questions is pretty simple. You will have to choose 'Life Science' as the subject for the CSIR UGC NET entrance exam. Regards.

You need to have 55% in Masters Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognised by UGC (list attached page No. 21 to 43) in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc.

There are two patterns and the candidate need to attempt both the sections. Paper 1, will be for the general aptitude test of 100 marks and will contain 50 questions of 2 marks each. Paper 2 is devised to test the candidates on their knowledge of the subject of their choice.
