In the current world university rankings, the Technical University of Munich ranks better than LMU. LMU Munich ranks at #59 in 2025 whereas, TUM ranks at #28 place. The acceptance rate of LMU is around 10%, which means that the university quite competitive. TUM acceptance rate is around 10%. Considering the acceptance rate it can be said that both the university are quite competitive when it comes to admissions. So, getting admission to both these universities would require the applicants to have a good academic background.

The Technical University of Munich is almost free for international students as it does not charge tuition fees for most of its courses. According to the law in Germany, as specified by TUM itself, there is no tuition fee. However, students must manage their additional expenses in order to study at TUM. The Technical University of Munich offers more than 150 programs across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Most of these programs are taught in English and German, both the languages. Most of the Engineering programs including Mechanical Engineering, Information Engineering, and Material Science Engineering are instructed in English and German. It is important to note, that the programs of Teaching and Education are only instructed in German language, but as part of their requirement, the university requires English proficiency tests for International students who come from non-English speaking countries.
