The University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) both are reputable universities with distinct advantages. The University of Maryland College Park is large and emphasizes more on athletics and research-focused studies. Conversely, UMBC is renowned for emphasizing undergraduate education, especially in specializations such as Science, Engineering, and Technology. Students must consider academic and career goals, and the atmosphere of the campus while choosing between two.

To be considered for admission to the University of Maryland, students should aim for a GPA greater than 4.45, as the average high school GPA for Fall 2022 applications was 4.47. The average GPA has improved since Fall 2020; that is, admissions to UMD in Fall 2020 had an average GPA of 4.36, whereas in Fall 2021, admissions had an average GPA of 4.39. Additionally, approximately 4,560 students in the fall of 2022 opted to submit their ACT or SAT results for application consideration rather than their GPAs. Therefore, the students have total control over how their applications are assessed.
