According to the facts stated on the official website of Wollongong University, it is a public university that has been established by the New South Wales law through the University of Wollongong Act 1989. However, its history traces back to 1951 when a Division of the then New South Wales University of Technology was founded in Wollongong. Ten years later, this Division became the Wollongong College of the University of New South Wales. Finally, in 1975, the University of Wollongong was incorporated by the Parliament of New South Wales as an independent institute.

Students who are based out of Australia have to engage through the services of a UOW international representative or agent since they cannot apply directly. The documents required for the UOW application are copies of all academic records, mark sheets or transcripts of studies previously undertaken.
