A shell is an interface between the user and the services of operating systems. In UNIX or other Linux based operating system, shells like bash and korn support programming construct which are saved as scripts. These scripts become shell commands and hence many Linux commands are script. Typical use of a shell script would be to automate what is required and present it in a desirable manner.
Generally scripts can be used to achieve several tasks. Listed only a few:
1. Create your own command/tool
2. Monitor several tasks like disk usage, etc.
