The difficulty level of IES questions has shown variations over time. In the IES exam, roughly 57% of the structural questions are categorized as easy, 29% as moderately difficult, and the remaining 14% as difficult. This distribution indicates a mix of question complexities in the exam. Comparatively, in GATE exams, around 45% of structural questions are easy, 22% are moderately difficult, and the remaining 33% are difficult.The analysis suggests that IES questions tend to have a higher proportion of easy questions compared to GATE. The difficulty level of IES questions can impact candidates' performance and preparation strategies for the exam. 

The Union Public Service Commission conduct the IES prelims exam in offline mode. The Commission prepares the IES answer key and compare the answers of the candidates with it. With comparing, the Commission calculate the marks of the candidates by awarding 2 marks for each correct question and deducting 0.6 marks for each incorrect answer.The Commission arrange the candidates in order of their merit in their category. The candidates from other category can be counted in unreserve category if they score equal or better marks than the Unreserved Category candidate. The Commission mention that "The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main/Stage-II Examination will be about six to seven times, the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year through this examination".
