For choosing optional subject, you have to choose the subject of your interest, because optional subject is one wherein you can show all your creativity to score high marks. Also, you need to check the previous mark history of optional subjects and also the assistance which you get on choosing an optional subject. The most popular optional subjects among UPSC Aspirants are Anthropology, Sociology and Public Administration.

If you want to prepare for UPSC CSE exam along with engineering, then you can choose the departments which can be chosen as an optional subject in exam such as mechanical, civil or electrical engineering.

The level of difficulty depends on what type of PG course you choose. UPSC does not give an added advantage for being a PG student. It requires a Bachelor's degree alone. So, my suggestion is you can prepare for exams at a stretch for a year.

Both the courses can lead you to a successful journey to UPSC performance. If opt for PCM then you can take maths as an optional subject. You should know that if you are strong at maths then you will have an extra edge over other aspirants because in maths you have exact ideal answers which will reduce the risk of losing your marks just because your answer will have a different perception.
