Many of the engineering colleges in India take admission on the basis of JEE score.
It is not necessary. There are many exams like COMEDK, state level exams like UPSEE,VIT .
But most of government institutions are accepting JEE score only. And, most of good private college too.

Admissions to VJTI, Mumbai are strictly based on merit only through on-line centralised admission process as per the guidelines of Government of Maharashtra and are conducted by Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra.
If you fulfill this criteria, you can get admission in VJTI, otherwise not. But no need to get disheartened. COEP is better any day, not just for a particular branch but as a college itself. It has a rich history, some exceptional alumni from both Mechanical and Instrumentation departments and frankly the brand speaks for itself. Mechanical department was very recently renovated, so you are going to GET state-of-the-art facilities there. Along with that comes the added bonus of good placements with good packages. Oh and a fun fact, our Mechanical department is 104 years old!
Instrumentation has always had state of the art labs and some amazing teaching faculty coupled with the great placement and packages. COEP is one of the oldest institutes

Yes, there is a chance that you will get textile or production branch in VJTI in 2nd/3rd round. But you should also know that textile and production branch is not as good as other, so if you want to change branch then you need at least 8+ pointer in 1st year. Getting 8+pointer is not difficult so you have good chances that you can flip the branch. Best of luck.
